Residence Hall Staff

The Department of Housing and Residence Life selects and trains professional and student staff to help students. Hall staff assist students in achieving personal and academic goals and provide effective management of the halls.

The residence halls are organized geographically into four areas: East Community (Gordon, Sneed, Bledsoe, Doak, Horn and Knapp), South Community: (Wall, Gates, Hulen and Clement Halls), North Community: (Carpenter/Wells Complex, Gaston, Stangel and Murdough) and West Community: (Chitwood, Weymouth and Coleman Halls). Each hall/complex has its own professional, operational and student staff.

Student Assistants
Student assistants (SAs) are residence hall students employed by the Department of Housing and Residence Life to assist in the daily management and operation of the residence halls. The SA is primarily involved in providing customer service for residents of the hall, visiting guests and other university officials. This position offers experience working with people, communications, resolving conflicts and assisting with administrative responsibilities and crisis management.

Community Advisers
Each floor in every residence hall has at least one resident assistant (CA), a student staff member living in the building to personally help his/her residents and their entire floor in every way possible. CAs are upper-class students specially trained in all aspects of residence hall living with the experience and knowledge to answer questions or to help find the answers.

Assistant Area Coordinators
Residence Life coordinators are full-time professionals employed by the Department of Housing and Residence Life. Their education, interest in students and experience in residence hall living qualify them for such positions. In addition to the general administration of the hall's physical operation, major responsibilities include working with program development to enhance the personal growth of each individual studentb advising students and hall government groups, coordinating the judicial process within the hall/complex and supervising and training student staff. Residence Life coordinators are available to assist with counseling and working with resident concerns.

Area Coordinators
Area Coordinators administer and supervise the operation of an area of halls. They are accountable for student and professional personnel, programming, management operation and staff development. He or she works with the area staff in developing and implementing residential programs. The area coordinators are part of the central staff team for Residence Life and they are responsible for implementing the strategic plan and goals of the department.

Graduate Hall Coordinators
Graduate hall coordinators are available to assist students with programming, conflict mediation and administrative duties. These part-time staff members are working toward their master's degree in higher education and committed to the ideals of student development. The GHCs will be available to assist students with a myriad of personal concerns and have similar job responsibilities as an assistant area coordinator.

Assistant Area Coordinator for Student Development
The assistant area coordinator for Student Development works with the Assistant Director of Residence Life to provide administrative, advising and project development assistance and student development leadership for the residents living in the residence halls. This position is responsible for the management of the Success Center, program implementation and the development of academic assistance for first-year students. The assistant area coordinator for student development is the primary adviser to the Residence Halls Association and is a co-adviser to the following student groups: NRHH, RA Council and the Carol of Lights Committee.

Associate/ Assistant Directors of Housing and Residence Life
The associate and assistant directors are each responsible for a functional area within the Department of Housing and Residence Life. These areas include Residence Life, Administrative & Financial Services and Facilities and Operations. The associate and assistant directors are supervised by the director of Housing and Residence Life, who provides overall direction and administration of the department.

Secretaries
Each building has a hall office staff with a secretary assisted by student assistants. They can help with making change, checking out equipment, reporting emergencies, completing work orders, selling guest meal tickets, vending refunds, checking lost and found, selling stamps and reporting lost keys.
